Million Dollar Blog

Been listening to a lot of Led Zeppelin lately. In love with the sound. A poll was conducted in the UK and people were asked to vote for their favourite singer, guitarists and drummer in order to come up with a 'super' band. The winners? Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham!

Some recommendations:

1. Heartbreaker- Led Zeppelin I
2. Babe I am gonna leave you- Led Zeppelin II
3. How many more times- Led Zeppelin I
4. Friends- Led Zeppelin III
5. Kashmir- Physical Graffiti
6. Led Zeppelin IV

Finally watched Million Dollar Baby. It was well made but I didn't enjoy the movie. It's one of those movies that Hollywood studios release every year around December with an eye on the academy awards. Two things are for sure- Clint Eastwood deserves a lot of credit for handling a very sensitive subject well and Hillary Swank is just unbelievably talented.

I don't think there is a single scene in the movie where one sees Swank, its all Maggie Fitzgerald- the boxer. The boxer who has just one goal- to become world champion. Its a real treat to see her act- be it the obvious delight on her face when she knocks boxers out or the pain during the climax.

I can see why this movie won the academy award- it presses the same buttons as the previous winners. However, I would like to see the academy give the best picture award to a intelligent movie. In other words I would like to see the mind beat the heart. I guess we have had enough number of movies about the human spirit win the Oscar. How about a movie like Memento or Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind winning the award for a change?

Why is Memento ranked so low on the IMDB list? 22 is a travesty!

Aaaah! I don't even want to get started on Memento. That movie left me with a headache that lasted a month, and I only need to think about the movie for it to recur. *runs to get some Aspirin*

it is very apparent that the academy prefers movies with a excessively disturbing storyline that almost verges on the repulsive. Actors therefore dumb themselves down or in the words of lindsay lohan 'get ugly' in order to gain recognition. this crass trend seems to getting undue attention from the ACAdemy and for entertainment's sake i hope it stops. i 'm not for 'chick flicks' or 'feel good films' but i'm totally against filmakers taking up such subjects and spicing them up with the only interest of achieving critical acclaim.

Memento was a gr8 film and deserved better from the academy. as for Eternal Sunshine-the movie SUCKED!!! interesting concept and al but the film was soooooooooooooooooo boring.

Ms. V: The movie rocks! I think you should give it another try.

Agree with you totally da.Its irritating to see actresses win acclaim because they went through a major make over. Ex: Nicole Kidman.

Eternal Sunshine was very good da. I thought the movie rocked! So do most people I know.

In your case, I think I built it up too much:)

Thank you. But I'll pass. I'd rather re-watch "Be Cool" or "The Incredibles" and laugh my socks off!!!

movies are personal, so I guess i am not surprised that people dont like it. But what DON'T you like about the movie?!

Great script, direction and decent acting and everything is explained clearly at the end! ( unlike say a movie like Mulholland dr.!)

12:06 AM
Blogger P said...

Soon da! very soon.

I don't know how that movie comes under the comedy category!

12:10 AM
Blogger Divya said...

It clearly doesn't come under the comedy genre. not a single comic moment I can remember. And yeah the concept was good. But it was definetly not worth all the build-up ppl gave it

well... memento had one major thing going for it! Re-watching potential. That's not something u find in all movies.. Movies such as the usual suspects, memento and fight club let you discover new stuff each time u watch it... that's the beauty.
As for million dollar baby, i wouldn't say it was overrated.. I thought it was better than the aviator. (Inspite of what Scorcese fans say over and over again). I was disappointed that he didn't win the oscar; but that was before i saw MLB..

Blogger P said...

nice to see ya here. Thats absolutely true especially with Fight Club ( another movie!) everytime you pick up a Tyler line that just seems to make a world of sense.

I don't think MDB was overrated but I expected a lot more from the Oscar winner.

i agree with u fully abt memento. its screenplay is just awesome. i dont think its overrated. plus guy pearce's acting is definitely good by academy standards. i rememeber blogging abt the movie as soon as i had watched it.

Blogger P said...

I saw your post da. Nice. It rocks! Pearce's acting is really good. I love the scene where he asks himself- "umm. why am I following this guy??"!

10:14 AM
Blogger P said...

and confused: betta get one soon!

10:15 AM
Blogger Ms. V said...

Sorry, but I'm still stuck at Memento! Everything explained clearly at the end? That's if you sat through the entire movie without blinking or gasping! That's just way too much work while watching something that's supposed to "entertain". Now The Sixth Sense was a movie that all fell together absolutely beautifully. And you didn't get a headache trying to figure it out. Guy Pearce was amazing though. Hot too! ;)

Blogger P said...

Thats the beauty of it. You absorb whatever is happening and at the end you get such a shock! Classic!

1:38 AM
Blogger Divya said...

U don absorb whats happening, U put up with what's happening and just wait for the end which u think will totally rock and then its just "oh ok" . It is not the kind of shock u get at then end of say "The Ususal suspects" or "Matchstick Men".Those were god-level movies

3:20 AM
Blogger P said...

Don't think so. Wasn't it obvious all the way who Kaizer Soze is??
Yet, you had dimwits on IMDB arguing that HE wasn't Soze.

As for Memento, most people never saw it coming. Though the concept of a movie going backwards is not original, the script definitely was. Very nicely done!

Anonymous Anonymous said...

Usual Suspects was captivating till the climax, which was great too, but some saw it coming. But noone could have predicted mementos ending, not very high on shock value but brilliant nevertheless.

As for matchstick men, A climax does not maketh a film. So what if the last 10 minutes were fast paced , i had to sit through 120 minutes of meaningless,father-daughter babble to get there.

8:00 AM
Blogger Divya said...

hey beg to differ but i liked the father daughter babble.. thats why the ending was unexpected.... and no it wasn't obvious who Kaizer soze was...

9:58 AM
Blogger akshay said...

there really is no point trying to figure out the crux of a movie all through the movie is there? I'd like to enjoy the movie as it is.. Which is why the Usual Suspects was so good. I was laboring through parts of the movie.. but the end kinda galvanized me in action and suddenly i wanted to watch it again to see what clues i coulda picked up along the way.

7:32 PM
Blogger P said...

Thats true da. You should take the movie as it comes but with Usual Suspects it became fairly obvious when he quoted that line about the devil! (google it)

I have to say both the movies are up there in my list of favourites.

i htought memento rocked
simply because it engrossed you
if you spent two hours watching the movie.. it paid off at the end..
when it all came together and fit in amazingly!

and eternal sunshine was another amazing movie.. i loved the romance.. so unmushy, unsugary sweet..

but yet.. the romance was so real. and it made me wanna be in love like that.. where whatever happens you keep fallin back in love with this one person..

the romance aside, the sheer meticulous attention to detail was amazing.. the parts where he tries to cut kate winslet out of his life, the various memories we build with the people around us.. it was engrossing..

loved both movies!

prashanth, think u r the only guy to have liked Eternal 'chick flick'.

9:18 PM
Blogger P said...

i thought the movie was different. It was just so unpredictable. Although the whole Kirsten Dunst- the doctor affair seemed a bit contrived. Loved the bits with Jim Carey as a kid and also the way he tries to fight a losing battle as his favourite memories are being eaten away. I loved it!

9:56 PM
Blogger P said...

It's not a chick flick! besides I don't care. Its better than say ..umm.. Freaky Friday?!

better than freaky friday.....but no way is it better than mean girls!am i the only one who loved that movie. lohan was sooo adorable in that movie.

H'm. I don't think "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" is a "chick flick" in any sense of the term. For one, it centers on a male protagonist. Besides, it is not "feel good" in any sense of the term. In fact, it is pretty depressing in the beginning. And unlike "chick flicks" or "light-hearted" movies as they would call it, it has something deeper to convey. Something that you can't quite put your finger on. And this is where the title of the movie is of significance. It is such a lovely title. It says so much that the movie (fortunately) didn't try and explain, although it did quote the poem.

I don't know what I want to take out of that movie. a) If we erase all our memories, then we have a chance to start afresh, with the person we love, or b) Even if we do start afresh, we will still come full circle and make the same mistakes we did and screw the relationship up. People are still people.

I think b) is more like it. Anyway, nice blog post Prashanth. I love the movie. And yes, I love Zeppelin.

And I forgot to mention Kauffman's screenplay. It is quite unlike any other movie's screenplay, let alone that of a "chick flick" movie. Ahem.

Yup, I do, but very recent, very irregular, very lazy. Good to see u read Maugham too, I really like him. He sucks at short stories, though. Haven't read Of Human Bondage yet, though. Have you read "the Razor's Edge"?

Just got that book from the library today! Of Human Bondage is a lovely book. You have to give it a try. There is so much I want to say but I think you should discover them yourself.

Maybe we can discuss the books after we finish them :) and yes Led Zep!
